The Chief Joseph design has captivated Pendleton since the 1920s - a tribute to the heroism of the legendary Nez Perce warrior, Hin-mahtoo-yah-lat-kert (which means Thunder Rolling Down Hill). The Nez Perce were renowned for their skill in battle and breeding of Appaloosa horses - and for their peace efforts with the US Government - such as their support and guidance of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery. The Chief Joseph blanket remains the oldest on-going blanket ever produced by Pendleton Woolen Mills, and its pattern of arrowheads symbolizes bravery in all directions of Mother Earth.
