Pendleton Big Medicine Blanket

The Pendleton Big Medicine blanket pays tribute to the revered legend of the white buffalo, which is born once every 10 million years. In 1933, a white buffalo was born on the Flathead Reservation in Western Montana, and was named Big Medicine in recognition of its sacred energy. This powerful event was interpreted by many Native Americans as a sign that an ancient prophecy was being fulfilled, foretelling a fresh start for the people of Earth. The Big Medicine blanket contains seven buffalo, symbolizing the seven directions of Native lore: North, South, East, West, Above, Below and Within. Representing wholeness and a connection to the Great Creator, the blanket also features prayer pipes and four hands within a circle, highlighting the varied ethnicities of the world. Its blend of brown and green colors honor the beauty of Mother Earth.
